Who hasn’t dreamed of meeting eyes with the snow leopard, the beautiful white leopard living in the mountains of Nepal, China, Russia ... And Kyrgyzstan !
Organized in collaboration with the scientists and game wardens (gamekeepers, park rangers) of the State Reserve Sary Tchat Ertach near Karakol in Kyrgyzstan, these trips are reserved for passionate mountaineers and adventurers aged 16 to 18 and over .
Called Panthera uncia in Latin, the snow leopard is currently in jeopardy because it is not protected worldwide. When the specialists at NABU (the German Agency for the protection of the panther) settled in these mountains, it was because Kyrgyzstan is one of the last countries to have many snow leopards (between 800 and 1400). Our intervention will help to ensure that this endangered feline is provided a sufficiently large territory to thrive. To do this we will monitor the presence of snow leopards on the extension of the reserve. With the help of motion-activated cameras we can identify individuals. By expanding our research beyond the borders of the reserve, we may even allow park rangers to ask their government to expand the reserve to protect these animals even further. In the future, the installation of a GPS collar on individual panthers will be one of the solutions to track their movements and learn more about their behavior.
Stay after stay, expedition after expedition, it will be possible to negotiate with the Kyrgyz state for the establishment of a biological corridor, a legally protected land for the panther, enabling it to reach its various habitats safely .

Kyrgyzstan is where ?
A peaceful small country in Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan is well known to members of Objective Science. A magical destination, (on their biggest banknote is a wise man sitting on a flying carpet ... !) this country is the preferred location for scientists to observe the snow leopard. Of course, It is not the only wild animal one may observe in the mountains of this country, there are also ibex, argali (mountain sheep), hawks, barbus vultures, wolves ...
By taking a flight from Paris, the trip is made in a little less than a day, in complete safety. Once arriving on site we reach our base, north of Karakol, a charming small town to the east of the great mountain lake Issilkul, lightly salted and the second largest mountain lake after Lake ... Titikaka !
The people of this country are warm and welcoming. They are part of the great Mongolian people, and enjoy sharing their stories and knowledge of the mountains with pleasure and generosity. Travel inside the reserve will be on horseback, the medium best suited to these mountains, where the horse has always held a prominent place. Crossing valleys surrounded by mountain ranges, we’ll experience the majesty of nature, which calls for respect of the surroundings. Unforgettable memories ! Between base camp located near a number of rivers and snow-capped peaks, we will be nomads on horseback with our gear, and on foot while exploring the rocky ridges (4000m on average) to search for signs of snow leopards (fingerprints, pellets, scratchings,...). The scientific data we collect will be added to those of past years, and the findings will allow us to make finer and finer conclusions. You will learn how to use scientific equipment, and try to analyse, with the help of our team, the behavior of this animal in order to better understand it and thus observe it.
At the bends of winding paths, we may pass a shepherd who is never far from his mountain yogurt and is happy to serve you a good bowl of mare’s milk, accompanied by bread and local honey. For the people of the mountains, the snow leopard is a great symbol of Kyrgyzstan. The locals often become park rangers, as they are the best to combat poaching and to help authorities improve the preservation of the snow leopards original habitat.
It will be difficult for us to approach the snow leopard, because like any cat, it is discreet and fierce. We must therefore use observation, identify strategies to put motion-sensing cameras, patience and intelligence to be able to collect photos or better yet, an opportunity to see the snow leopard in its natural environment. Keep in mind that this adventure full of humility, living in a pristine environment that is unfortunately increasingly rare ...
Following the footsteps of the snow leopard : You want to participate in a huge conservation project, and you love cats and travel ? Expedition PANTHERA is for you ! You will contribute to the establishment of a program to safeguard the snow leopard in Kyrgyzstan.
Qui n’a pas rêvé de croiser le regard de la panthère des neiges, ce magnifique léopard blanc vivant dans les montagnes du Népal, de Chine, de Russie... et du Kirghizstan !
Organisé en collaboration avec les scientifiques et gardes-chasses de la réserve d’état de Sary Tchat Ertach près de Karakol au Kirghizstan, ces séjours sont réservés aux passioné(e)s de montagne et d’aventures âgés de 16 à 18 ans et plus.
Appelée Panthera uncia en latin, Snow Leopard en anglais, la Panthère des Neiges est aujourd’hui en danger, car elle n’est pas encore protégée partout. Lorsque les spécialistes du NABU (organisme allemand de sauvegarde de la panthère) se sont installés dans ces montagnes, c’est bien parce que ce pays est un des derniers à posséder autant de panthère de neiges (entre 800 et 1400). Notre intervention va permettre de s’assurer que ce félin en voie de disparition évolue sur un territoire suffisamment vaste. Pour cela nous relèverons des indices de présences sur l’étendu de la réserve pour s’assurer de sa présence. A l’aide de pièges photos nous pourrons identifier les individus. Le fait d’étendre nos recherches en dehors des frontières de la réserve pourra même permettre aux garde chasses de proposer à leur gouvernement d’agrandir encore la réserve pour protéger notre animal toujours plus loin. Dans l’avenir, la pose d’un collier GPS sur des individus, sera une des solutions pour suivre ses déplacements et en apprendre encore sur son comportement.
Séjour après séjour, expédition après expédition, il sera alors possible de négocier avec l’état Kirghiz la mise en place d’un couloir biologique, sorte de terrain protégé légalement pour la panthère et qui lui permettra de rejoindre ses différents lieux de vie sans risque.

Le Kirghizstan, c’est où ???
Paisible petit pays d’Asie centrale, le Kirghizstan est bien connu des membres de l’association . Destination magique (sur leur plus gros billet de banque figure un sage assis sur un... tapis volant !) ce pays est celui que les scientifiques préfèrent pour observer la Panthère des Neiges. Elle n’est pas le seul animal sauvage observable dans les montagnes de ce pays bien sûr, et on y trouve notamment ibex, argalis, griffon, barbus, loups...
En prenant l’avion au départ de Paris, le voyage se fait en un peu moins d’une journée, en toute sécurité. Une fois arrivés sur place nous rejoignons notre base, située au nord de Karakol, charmante petite ville située à l’Est du grand lac de montagne Issilkul, légèrement salé et deuxième plus grand lac de montagne après le lac... Titikaka !
Les gens de ce pays sont accueillants et souriants. Ils font partie du grand peuple Mongol, et aimeront partager leurs légendes et leurs connaissances des montagnes avec un plaisir et une générosité séduisante. Les déplacements à l’intérieur de la réserve se feront à cheval, moyen le mieux adapté à ces montagnes intacts, et où le cheval à toujours tenu une place prépondérante. En traversant des vallées encerclés de chaînes de montagnes grandioses, on vit une épopée nature qui appel au respect des lieux. Souvenirs inoubliables, entre camp de base établi près des nombreuses rivières, et sommets enneigés, nous serons nomades à cheval avec le matériel, et à pied pour prospecter sur les crêtes rocheuses (4000m en moyenne) à la recherche d’indices de présences (empreintes, crottes, grattages,...). Nos données scientifiques récoltés viendront enrichir celles des années passées, et permettront des constats de plus en plus fins. Vous apprendrez à utiliser du materiel scientifique, tenterez d’analyser avec l’aide de notre équipe le comportement de cet animal pour mieux l’appréhender et ainsi mieux l’observer.
Au détour, de sinueux sentiers, on pourra croiser un berger, jamais loin de sa yourte de montagne, qui sera près à vous servir un bon bol de lait de jument, accompagné de pain et de miel local. La panthère des neiges est pour ce peuple des montagnes, un grand symbole du kirghizstan, et souvent devenus gardes chasses, ces habitants s’appliquent au mieux à lutter contre le braconnage, et à aider les autorités à toujours mieux la sauvegarder dans son habitat d’origine.
Il nous sera difficile de l’approcher, car comme tout félin, elle saura se rendre discrète et et farouche. Il nous faudra donc user d’observation, de stratégie pour la pose de nos pièges photos, de patience et de savoir faire pour parvenir à ramener des clichés ou mieux la voir dans son environnement naturel. Gardons en tête que cette aventure pleine d’humilité, se vit dans un environnement intact que l’on rencontre hélas de plus en plus rarement...
